Hardy palm tree
Would you like to decorate your garden with the exotic charms of a palm tree in open ground? Make sure you choose a palm tree that is hardy. A hardy palm tree will be able to survive European winters. They will not get root or leaf damage due to frost. Despite that, maintenance for hardy palm trees is still important. Keep the spot you would like to plant it at in mind. A sheltered location can make a significant difference regarding the health of a palm tree. Even less hardy palms can survive in sheltered locations. If you place your palm tree in a container, there is a few additional things to keep in mind. Sometimes it might even be better to put your palm tree away indoors or in a shed. As palm trees can survive well in low-light environments during winter, it might be a safer alternative for some palm trees to ensure they remain healthy throughout winter. See our winter protection page for products and info that can also help you sustain your palm tree.

Frequently asked questions
Trachycarpus fortunei is a hardy and well known palm tree suited for the European climates. Trachycarpus wagnerianus and Chamaerops humilis are also hardy outdoor palm trees. They can survive our winters with no/light winter protection. Butia capitata, Butia eriospatha and Jubaea chilensis are the hardiest feather palm trees.
Most palm trees are not self-cleaning. That means you have to cut the leaves yourself when the leaves get older. Some palm trees drop their old leaves, as will be indicated on our product page. By pruning a palm tree, you promote newer growth. You can prune a palm at any time, except during periods of frost. Make sure to use clean pruning shears.
Palm trees are well suited as potted plants. A potted palm tree is easier to move around in winter. Do keep the moisture level in mind when potting a palm tree. Palm trees in a pot are more vulnerable to frost if not put in a sheltered location. Palm trees in a container also tend to grow slower – which makes them more suitable for indoors.
