Growth and fruits of the papaya bring a touch of exotic into your garden. The fruits are eaten raw or processed into chutney or curry. The plant comes from Ecuador and was cultivated there long ago, before the arrival of the Europeans. Later the papaya was also bred in New Zealand, Israel and the USA.
Carica papaya grows relatively quickly, has large leaves and large, five-edged fruits. These are first dark green, but mature very quickly to the yellow fruit. The ripe fruits should be harvested soon because branched plants otherwise have problems to carry the heavy fruits (weight up to 600 g). It is, therefore, advisable to first cultivate in a single trunk. It is then possible that the plants with 5 to 10 fruits on one plant grow.
