Container plants

Container plants have become very popular in last few years. These are often plants that can be found in tropical and subtropical countries. This is why they are often associated with summery holidays. They are not only popular in The Netherlands, but all over Europe. Are you looking for container plants to spruce up your garden or terrace? You have found the right place at MyPalmShop. You can find practically all popular container plants in our range.

Container plants and their characteristics

As the name might give away, container plants are kept in a container. This allows you to move the plant easily. This can be useful for winters – often even necessary. Most container plants are not able to withstand (severe) frost. During Spring, Summer and Autumn, they can easily be kept outside, but they have to be relocated to a sheltered place during Winter. This way, you can protect your container plant against frost, allowing you to enjoy the plant for many years to come. MyPalmShop also offers container plants that are hardy. These can be kept outside all year long. We think that container plants for a terrace are a great addition!

Popular container plants

You can find many different plants in the full range of containers plants of MyPalmShop. You can find popular container plants, but also plants you may not have heard of before. Popular containers plants include:

This is how to care for a container plant

A container plant needs a relatively large amount of care. They are often used to a tropical climate. They are likely not used to our winters. Place them inside during winter to protect them. Other maintenance tips are:

  • In Spring, most container plants start flowering. If you take your plants out of their winter shelter, it is best to place them as a sunny location.
  • Most plants do not like wet soil and prefer water once the soil has dried somewhat.
  • The pot used for your container plant should have, if possible, holes at the bottom side to drain water. This prevents root rot and allows surplus of water to be drained properly.
  • It is also recommended to provide fertilizer for your container plants, especially in Spring.
  • During Autumn, most plants can be pruned. That way, they are ready for winter and can grow and flower more beautifully during Spring. You can prune old, dead branches and leaves. You can also bring the plant back in shape.

The specific maintenance information for strong container plants can be found on the labels or product page of the specific plant. Are you not entirely sure if you are caring for your plant correctly? Do not hesitate to ask our customer service for advice.

Protecting container plants against frost

Container plants are usually not resistant against frost, so we recommend placing these plants in open ground. It is not necessary impossible to place these in open ground. If you do, it may be necessary to provide winter protection. It is best to use climate cloth or specialized winter protection. These allow water and air to go through so your plant can breathe, while still protecting your plant against frost. If you have a container plant that you can move around, we recommend simply placing it in a shed or other frost-free area. A living room is often too warm and may experience more significant fluctuations of temperature. A garage or carport can also be suitable. The best time to move your plants is in October or November, right before the first frost. You can bring them outside again in Spring.
