Origin of the palm tree
In contrast to Trachycarpus fortunei, Trachycarpus wagnerianus most likely does not originate in China. Although it is not fully certain, it is widely assumed Trachycarpus wagnerianus originates through selective breeding in Japan. Wagner palm trees are most commonly found in moderate and colder climates in Europe, such as the Pyrenees in Spain or the Alps in Italy. Summers get fairly warm here, but snowfall in winter is very common too. That way, palm trees grown in these areas are better suited for colder climates, as they have grown more used to it. You only have to protect Trachycarpus wagnerianus against the most severe of frosts. It is hardy up to – 17 degrees Celsius.
Characteristics of Trachycarpus wagnerianus
Trachycarpus wagnerianus is a remarkable palm. Its dark green leaves are fantastic to behold. The hairy, brown trunk with cheerful petioles make this palm the eye catcher it is. Each petiole has thin leaves that appear fan-like. Because of the leaves, the tree has a somewhat spherical look when smaller. It is available in various trunk- and pot sizes at MyPalmShop. You can choose your ideal size. Whether you would like to place them on a balcony or in the garden, there is a size fitting for each spot. Trachycarpus wagnerianus looks even better when flowering. A Wagner palm tree is well suited for outdoors. It can handle snow and frost all the way up to -17 degrees Celsius.

Trachycarpus wagnerianus vs. Trachycarpus fortunei
In the full range of MyPalmShop, you can find various species of Trachycarpus. For example, we distinguish between Trachycarpus wagnerianus and Trachycarpus fortunei. Both palms are very hardy, but they do have their differences. The leaves of the Wagner palm are stiff, making it most resistant against wind.
The growth speed of Trachycarpus wagnerianus a bit slower than Trachycarpus fortunei. It also remains more compact and thus is used for Bonsai more often. Both palms are salt resistant and can be used for gardens near seas. The leaves are also different. Trachycarpus wagnerianus have darker coloured leaves than fortunei. They are shorter and more spherical. This gives Trachycarpus a slightly more elegant look than fortunei. Hence, the Wagner palm is more often used in more exclusive gardens. That said, Trachycarpus fortunei have more voluminous leaves that appear more playful. So, regardless of your preference, there is a palm tree that fits your taste.
Trachycarpus wagnerianus x takil; the best of both!
Trachycarpus wagnerianus is suited to make hybrids with. For example Trachycarpus wagnerianus x takil, which is a cross between Trachycarpus wagnerianus and the Kumaon palm, Trachycarpus takil. Trachycarpus takil grows on altitudes of 1800 metres, which makes him very resistant against frost and snow. As the Wagner palm is also known for its hardiness, the hybridisation of both led to a palm that has the best of both worlds. This hybrid is an example – we regularly have other hybrids available. Do keep in mind that these are not always available, however.
