Origin of Vulcano palms
Many palm trees grow in sunny and dry areas. This also goes for Chamaerops humilis Vulcano. Vulcano dwarf palms originate at the island of Vulcano, after which it was named. This island is located in the Mediterranean, near the Italian island of Sicily. Throughout the years, this palm has spread over the world, including in many European countries, where it is often planted in gardens. Aside from that, it can also be commonly found as a potted plant.
Chamaerops humilis Vulcano is quite hardy
Vulcano dwarf palms are very popular in Europe. This is due to its ornamental look. In addition, its silvery leaves create a beautiful effect. Would you like to buy a Chamaerops humilis Vulcano? You will not regret it, even in winter, as it can withstand frost. We recommend protecting the palm from temperatures below -10 degrees Celsius.
Extra winter protection tips
- Although Chamaerops humilis Vulcano is hardy, we recommend protection during severe frosts. Use breathing materials, such as jute or special winter protection, to protect your palm against frost.
- Ensure that the Vulcano does not stand in water, especially during cold periods, to avoid root rot and spear rot.

In your garden
Whenever we think about palm trees, we often think about tall trees with coconuts. As those palm trees reach significant heights and are typically not hardy, they are unsuitable for your garden. Fortunately, not every palm tree is the same. Chamaerops humilis Vulcano generally does not reach that high. They are, after all, known as the Mediterranean dwarf palm. This palm tree is a very slow grower. It can take years before they reach a height of 2 metres in temperate climates. You can, of course, also buy a small Chamaerops humilis Vulcano, but we also have plenty of large ones if you are looking for a bigger tree. We also have a few other varieties of Chamaerops humilis available.
In your garden
It is best to place the palm at a sunny spot in open ground or a pot with drainage holes. That way, you avoid drowning the roots, whilst allowing the palm to produce new leaves. The amount of water you should give to your palm depends on the size of the palm and its location, as well as the temperature and the soil used. We recommend starting off slowly, as the palm is drought resistant. Check the soil again the day after – it should be slightly humid, but not wet. If it is still dry, provide more water. If it is wet, provide less water.
This is how you should care for Chamaerops humilis Vulcano
- Location:
- Prefers a sunny location with proper drainage.
- Look for a spot with at least 5 hours of direct sunlight.
- Watering:
- Has a preference for regular watering, despite its origin in dry, warm areas.
- Can withstand dry periods, as long as they receive a bit more water afterwards.
- During Winter, this palm can easily go a week without water – it prefers significantly less water.
- During Summer, especially during tropical days, it needs more water, and you can provide a significant amount of water.
- Fertilizer:
- Extra nutrients are recommended after Winter, when the plant wakes up from its hibernation.
- Strictly follow the instructions on the packaging of the fertilizer; improper usage of fertilizer can damage your plants.
- Most fertilizers are easy to use, even when inexperienced.
- Pruning:
- The leaves of Chamaerops humilis Vulcano can be pruned all year through.
- Cut brown leaves off close to the trunk with sharp pruning shears.
- Brown leaves are generally not harmful to the plant, but can make it less ornamental.
Recognize the needs of a palm by looking at the leaves
By looking at the leaves of a palm, you can often read about the health of the palm. Chamaerops humilis typically does not discolour quickly. Despite that, they can change colour due to the following reasons:
- Brown: Brown leaves die off as they have aged. You can simply prune these with pruning shears. This is most common right after winter, especially if the palm is not fully rooted yet. This is no reason for concern.
- Yellow: The leaves can turn yellow when they receive insufficient nitrogen. We recommend adding some fertilizer. Do not use more fertilizer than recommended on the packaging. Our slow release fertilizer is very suitable and easy to use.
- Black: This can be encountered if you keep your palm tree outside during winter. Black leaves are the results of frost damage or mould. Mould is mostly caused by usage of the wrong winter protection. Never use plastic or fleece to cover trunks or leaves, and always allow your palm tree to ‘breathe’ by removing the protection whenever the weather allows it.
