Characteristics of the kaki tree
Kaki trees, also known as the oriental persimmon or scientifically as Diospyros kaki, are remarkable trees. This tree grows fairly slow, which is excellent for those who want a tree that can somewhat be controlled in height and size. Despite its slow growth, the tree will eventually reach somewhere between 2-5 metres tall, depending on the specific race and growth circumstances.
Flowers of the kaki tree
The flowering period of the kaki tree is between April and May. It will be a beautiful eye-catcher with its gorgeous yellow blossoms. The flowering period only lasts several weeks, depending on the climate and weather. During this time period, the tree transforms from an unremarkable tree to a remarkable, flowering appearance. The yellow flowers add a fantastic contrast with the dark green leaves, providing the tree with its ornamental touch. After flowering, the fruit will be produced.
Fruit of the kaki tree
The fruit of the kaki tree, also known as the persimmon or sharon, are a real treat for both the eyes and mouth. This yellow/orange (and sometimes red) fruit are sweet and juicy with a smooth texture. The fruit are rich in nutrients, including vitamin A and C, as well as various antioxidants that are beneficial for your health. The fruit ripens in Fall and are at their best when they’ve withstood the first bit of frost, as that increases the amount of sugars and breaks down the tannines that can otherwise make the fruit somewhat wry. The best time to harvest the fruit is the end of October or start of November.
Versatlity of kaki
After harvesting, the fruit can be kept for a few weeks. They can also be frozen for a longer storage period. That is why the fruit is so suitable for both direct consumption as well as in salads and desserts. Due to their sweetness and structure, they are a popular choice for jams and purées.
Maintaining Kaki trees
Location
A kaki tree can best be planted somewhere with sufficient sunlight, which is essential for good growth and fruit production. In addition, provide the tree with well drained, slightly calcareous soil.
Hardiness and care
Although kaki trees are hardy down to about -15 degrees Celsius, we recommend protecting small, young trees against severe frost with winter protection. Kaki trees need very little pruning, especially the first few years. Make sure that the tree is somewhat open so that the fruit receive sufficient sunlight and heat.
Water
Kaki trees require little help with watering, except during dry periods. This is particularly the case for potted plants. Provide the tree with additional fertilizer in March to enhance healthy grow and rich fruit production.
