Bamboo for pots – the perfect green solution for balconies, patios and gardens

Bamboo in pots is a great choice if you're looking for an evergreen, natural and stylish solution to add privacy, structure or atmosphere to your balcony, terrace or smaller garden. With its graceful canes, rustling leaves and upright growth habit, bamboo is a popular container plant for both modern and natural garden designs.

Clumping vs. running varieties – what works in a container?

At MyPalmShop, we offer a wide range of clumping bamboo species (Fargesia), such as Fargesia Rufa, Black Pearl, Winter Joy and robusta Campbell. These varieties grow in dense clumps, are highly cold-hardy, and do not require a root barrier – making them ideal for pots and planters.

We also occasionally stock non-clumpingbamboo varieties, including Phyllostachys and Pseudosasa. These are more vigorous growers with underground runners. When kept in containers, the spread is naturally limited, but always ensure the pot is sturdy and offers good drainage. These types are mainly available in spring, which is the ideal planting season. If unsure, choose a clumping type or use a root barrier for extra security.

Choosing the right pot and soil for bamboo

Bamboo thrives in spacious containers with proper drainage. The recommended pot size depends on the plant’s size – small bamboo can grow in pots from 30 cm in diameter, while larger plants benefit from 40–50 cm or more. Make sure your pot is frost-resistant and allows excess water to drain freely.

Use a light, nutrient-rich soil like our palm soil, which is also ideal for bamboo. You can improve structure by mixing in perlite. Water regularly, especially during summer. A yearly application of nitrogen-rich fertiliser – such as our palm fertiliser – supports healthy growth.

Applications of potted bamboo

Bamboo in pots offers great versatility:

  • As a green screen on balconies or terraces

  • To enhance privacy in patios and small outdoor spaces

  • As an ornamental centrepiece in modern or Japanese-style gardens

  • To bring vertical structure and natural movement

Thanks to its evergreen character, bamboo retains its beauty year-round. During freezing temperatures, keep an eye on the moisture in the soil and protect the pot if necessary.

Effortlessly elegant

Potted bamboo is not only beautiful, but also low-maintenance. With minimal effort, you’ll enjoy a lush and resilient plant for years. Whether you choose a refined Fargesia or a vigorous Phyllostachys, bamboo brings height, structure and serenity to any outdoor area.
