Metrosideros thomasii - IJzerhoutboom
Metrosideros thomasii is an evergreen exotic tree / shrub which originally comes from New Zealand.
The mature tree at 20 years can attain a height of up to 3 to 5 meters. Great, fiery red (crimson) flowers adorn the bush from late spring until the summer. The leaves are gray / green.
As a young plant this is a shrub, but as it gets older small branches umbrella out on a short trunk.
A sunny warm place is ideal for the Metrosideros thomasii. During flowering liquid fertilizer should be given but only once a week is sufficient. Keep slightly moist, even older plants are fairly drought-tolerant.
Keep pruned well. This is best done after flowering to keep the plant in the desired shape and height.
After flowering, fertilize sparingly once a month, a small amount is sufficient. In winter, administer no fertilizer.
