This tree fern originates from New Zealand. It is recognisable by its almost black, slender trunk, black leaf stems and tendrils stemming from the root or trunk. The Dicksonia squarrosa can reach a height of 3 metres (6 feet). It grows the best in a damp, shadowy place and it is essential to keep the trunk moist. This fern can take about 5 degrees of frost but its best to keep it frost free during the winter. Its very suited to growing in a pot.
