If you are looking for an exotic plant that can transform your garden or terrace, consider a Dicksonia antarctica. This tree fern from Australia is known for its elegant appearance and can be a real eye-catcher. MyPalmShop would like to tell you more about caring for Dicksonia antarctica and would like to provide tips and advice.

Origin of Dicksonia antarctica

Dicksonia antarctica, also known as the soft tree fern, is a tree fern species native to mainland Australia and Tasmania. The plant can reach up to 15 metres tall and has a thick, fibrous trunk with deep green leaves. Dicksonia antarctica is also known for being quite able to withstand colder temperatures as well.

Location

Dicksonia antarctica prefers a humid, half-shady to shady spot and is best planted in well drained soil. Ensure that the soil does not dry out, but avoid drenching it as well. Dicksonia antarctica is best sheltered against hard winds and severe frost.

Watering

Dicksonia antarctica requires a lot of water, especially in warm summer months. It is important that the soil remains humid, but not soaked. Water the plant regularly and check how humid the soil is. We recommend using rainwater, as it generally is softer and contains fewer minerals.

Fertilizer

Dicksonia antarctica does not require a lot of nutrients, but can be fertilized with a fern fertilizer occasionally. Do not use fertilizers with too much nitrogen, as this can stimulate unregulated growth, weakened trunk. The best time to provide fertilizer is in Spring and Summer.

Pruning

Pruning a Dicksonia antarctica is generally not necessary, except when the plant becomes damaged or too large. You can cut off dead leaves with clean pruning shears to provide a tidier look to the plant. If it grows too large, you can remove the bottom layer of the leaves. We do not recommend cutting off too many leaves, however, as that may cause damage to the plant.

Winter

Dicksonia antarctica is quite hardy, and can withstand lower temperatures. We do recommend protecting it against severe wind and frost, however. You can protect the plant by wrapping the trunk with climate cloth and cover the roots with mulch (straw, leaves etc.). Avoid drenching the plant during winter, as that may cause root rot, but also don’t let it fully dry out either.

Enjoying Dicksonia antarctica optimally

Dicksonia antarctica is a beautiful plant that can transform your garden or terrace into an exotic paradise. With the right care, your plant can live for many years and provide you with a fantastic eye-catcher. Keep the plant in a humid, shady spot and provide water regularly. Fertilize and prune the plant where necessary, and protect the plant during winter against severe wind and frost. With these tips, you can optimally enjoy Dicksonia antarctica.
