Brahea armata

Blue Mexican Fan Palm tree

Distinctive blue/grey leaved feather palm

Very distinctive and attractive plant with large, blue/grey fan leaves. It grows to 12 m in height. Natural habitat is Rocky canyons, north-western Mexico and California.

Prefers full sun in a dry, very well drained situation. It is very frost resistant, and established good sized plants have been known to survive -10C, or even to recover from lower temperatures when damaged. It grows slowly but steadily and once established is one of the most beautiful and sought after palms in the world.

It reacts very badly to being dug from the ground so it is important to buy pot grown specimens where possible.

We recommend Palmbooster for this plant!

To help your palm develop strong roots during the growing season, and particularly after transplantation, we strongly recommend the use of Palmbooster. In the spring, try a combination with palmfocus.

Brahea brandegeei

Hesper palm

A big and beautiful palm with green leaves that are sometimes distinctly glaucous on the underside, and sometimes on both sides. It has thorny petioles and big, round, yellow fruits, which add to its attractiveness.

Though locally common in the northwest of Mexico, it has not yet been used widely in cultivation.

Brahea edulis

Guadalupe Palm

Beautiful, fast-growing palm

Excellent palm and reasonably frost resistant! It grows in natural habitat on steep rocky slopes (North end of Guadalope Island, off the west coast of Mexico). It grows to about 10m tall.

This is the only Brahea not to have persistant dead leaves. Dislikes high humidity.
This palm is proving quite successful in our warmer winters, some UK specimens having reached trunking size over 10 years. Good sized established plants have been known to survive -6C and even to recover from lower temperatures. It is generally regarded as being the fastest growing Brahea, and once established and with greater size seems to increase its resistance to cold.

Butia capitata var. odorata

Jelly Palm

The most common Butia in cultivation

This feather palm is native to a large part of southern Brazil and Uruguay. It grows in open areas or cerrado vegetation on sandy soils. The non-cerrado populations in Southern Brazil growing on the coast in sandy soil clearly differ, and should be considered a separate species. See Butia catarinensis. They form the world's largest remaining stand of wild Butias in Rocha, Uruguay.

The palm grows to 6m tall, although in cultivation it can grow considerably higher. It is very frost resistant, and established good sized plants have been known to survive -10C, or even to recover from lower temperatures when damaged, although protection during such spells of cold is highly recommended.

The palm is still common in gardens of South Brazil where it is grown for its sweet fruits.

Butia catarinensis

Butia of the Beach, Southern Jelly Palm

Perfect feather palm for the small garden

This palm is formally classified as Butia capitata var odorata. Many experts consider it should be a separate species, and having seen the palm growing in the wild I can only agree, as it could not be more different.

Native to Southern Brazil and named locally Butia de bahia or Butia of the beach, the palm is small compared to the usual Butia capitata, the trunk rarely exceeds 6 inches width and 3m height. The span rarely exceeds 2 metres. Considerably hardy, and extremely beautiful, it is extremely hard to understand why this palm is not in cultivation. It will make the perfect palm for the small European garden and seems destined for a successful introduction into general cultivation.

The palm grows by the million in parts of Southern Brazil, and every house seems to have a palm in the front garden as it is small, decorative with beautiful blue/silvery leaves and never gets too large.

Palms are available from seedlings to mature fully grown specimens with 3m trunks.

Butia eriospatha

Woolly Jelly Palm tree

Superb feather palm

The fastest growing and hardiest Butia, this beautiful feather palm is native to areas of Southern Brazil at elevations of 1000 m above sea level. Here it is much colder and wetter in winter than the rest of Brazil, and even in summer temperatures can often be similar to those seen in Northern Europe.

Suited to our climate
It is a mystery to me why this palm is not the most popular choice for Northern European gardens, as it is undoubtedly the best suited to our cool and wet climate. It is very frost resistant, and established good sized plants have been known to survive -12C, or even to recover from lower temperatures when damaged! However, protection during such spells of cold is highly recommended.

The tree is named because of the brown fuzzy tomentum covering the flower spathe. It can reach 6m high in the wild, and almost certainly more in cultivation. It can be found growing both in the wild and in cultivation throughout all of the mountainous area of South Brazil where it is cultivated for its sweet and delicious fruits.
