Archontophoenix alexandrae

King Palm Tree

The Archontophoenix alexandrae is a beautiful indoor palm which is certainly not easily obtainable. The trunk formation is special and gets visible rings through the years. In it's natural habitat it can grow up to 12 meters, but this is not possible in our climate. However at favourable conditions in a garden, office or hot-house it can reach an acceptable growth rate.

Archontophoenix cunninghamiana

Bangalow Palm-King Palm/Cunninghams Palm tree

This is a very similar palm to Archontophoenix alexandrae in both appearance and size. But it is more cold-tolerant. These palms can be grown in full sun (if kept well watered), or in the shade.

They do like more water than most palms, with some even thriving in poorly drained areas. In their native habitat, they can often be seen growing next to and even in creek beds. It makes a good house- or conservatory plant if the light is good. This palm's natural habitat is the rainforest of Australia.

This is an excellent indoor plant if kept in a sunny place!

We recommend Palmbooster for this plant!

To help your palm develop strong roots during the growing season, and particularly after transplantation, we strongly recommend the use of Palmbooster. In the spring, try a combination with palmfocus.

Beccariophoenix alfredii

High Plateau Coconut Palm

The Beccariophoenix alfredii is a recently discovered palm species, closely related to the genus Cocos. It occurs in the High Plateau of Madagascar, where it grows at an elevation of 1.050m (3000 feet). It is therefore a rare palm in nature! It is very similar in appearance to the coconut palm, making it a good look-alike for the coconut in cooler climates.

Butia capitata var. odorata

Jelly Palm

The most common Butia in cultivation

This feather palm is native to a large part of southern Brazil and Uruguay. It grows in open areas or cerrado vegetation on sandy soils. The non-cerrado populations in Southern Brazil growing on the coast in sandy soil clearly differ, and should be considered a separate species. See Butia catarinensis. They form the world's largest remaining stand of wild Butias in Rocha, Uruguay.

The palm grows to 6m tall, although in cultivation it can grow considerably higher. It is very frost resistant, and established good sized plants have been known to survive -10C, or even to recover from lower temperatures when damaged, although protection during such spells of cold is highly recommended.

The palm is still common in gardens of South Brazil where it is grown for its sweet fruits.

Butia catarinensis

Butia of the Beach, Southern Jelly Palm

Perfect feather palm for the small garden

This palm is formally classified as Butia capitata var odorata. Many experts consider it should be a separate species, and having seen the palm growing in the wild I can only agree, as it could not be more different.

Native to Southern Brazil and named locally Butia de bahia or Butia of the beach, the palm is small compared to the usual Butia capitata, the trunk rarely exceeds 6 inches width and 3m height. The span rarely exceeds 2 metres. Considerably hardy, and extremely beautiful, it is extremely hard to understand why this palm is not in cultivation. It will make the perfect palm for the small European garden and seems destined for a successful introduction into general cultivation.

The palm grows by the million in parts of Southern Brazil, and every house seems to have a palm in the front garden as it is small, decorative with beautiful blue/silvery leaves and never gets too large.

Palms are available from seedlings to mature fully grown specimens with 3m trunks.
