Brahea armata

Blue Mexican Fan Palm tree

Distinctive blue/grey leaved feather palm

Very distinctive and attractive plant with large, blue/grey fan leaves. It grows to 12 m in height. Natural habitat is Rocky canyons, north-western Mexico and California.

Prefers full sun in a dry, very well drained situation. It is very frost resistant, and established good sized plants have been known to survive -10C, or even to recover from lower temperatures when damaged. It grows slowly but steadily and once established is one of the most beautiful and sought after palms in the world.

It reacts very badly to being dug from the ground so it is important to buy pot grown specimens where possible.

We recommend Palmbooster for this plant!

To help your palm develop strong roots during the growing season, and particularly after transplantation, we strongly recommend the use of Palmbooster. In the spring, try a combination with palmfocus.

Brahea brandegeei

Hesper palm

A big and beautiful palm with green leaves that are sometimes distinctly glaucous on the underside, and sometimes on both sides. It has thorny petioles and big, round, yellow fruits, which add to its attractiveness.

Though locally common in the northwest of Mexico, it has not yet been used widely in cultivation.

Brahea edulis

Guadalupe Palm

Beautiful, fast-growing palm

Excellent palm and reasonably frost resistant! It grows in natural habitat on steep rocky slopes (North end of Guadalope Island, off the west coast of Mexico). It grows to about 10m tall.

This is the only Brahea not to have persistant dead leaves. Dislikes high humidity.
This palm is proving quite successful in our warmer winters, some UK specimens having reached trunking size over 10 years. Good sized established plants have been known to survive -6C and even to recover from lower temperatures. It is generally regarded as being the fastest growing Brahea, and once established and with greater size seems to increase its resistance to cold.

Chamaerops humilis 'Vulcano'

Vulcano Fan Palm

This very pretty miniature form of the popular Chamaerops humilis is native to the tiny Island Vulcano in the Mediterranean Sea north of Sicily. Quite distinct from "regular" Chamaerops humilis, it grows into a compact dwarf plant with short, blunt-tipped, grass green leaves with waxy whitish backs, and few thorns on the leafstalk.

It has become popular among collectors in Europe in recent years and although it has enormous potential as an ornamental plant, it is still rarely offered. In cultivation it is just as tough and resistant as any Chamaerops, and one of the best palms for temperate climates.

Copernica alba

Caranday wax palm

This palm grows in open areas to aproximately 20m (60 feet) tall, and the trunk is used to build bungalows.

Fruits are blacks and ovoids when mature, seeds ovoids, germinate easily if fresh.

Not well known in cultivation, this palm is the most cold resistent of all Copernicias. It is easy to care for and doesn't need much light.

In its natural situation it's possible to see populations with grey and green leaves. Furthermore there are many known variations (ecotypes) in the form and size of the trunk or/and size and form of the leaves and petioles.

Habitat is Paraquay and Argentina, also some parts of Brazil and Bolivia
